From an anarkid to a tankie, I gotta ask, why do you think Stalin dindu nuffin? Looking at the Holodomor, it's kind of up in the air imo as to how much of the deaths were due to kulaks spitefully killing herds rather than see them collectivized, the unintentional failures of rapid collectivization, overenthusiastic grain collection, and how much was Stalin hoarding grain to punish said Kulaks (as well as all the unfortunates who happened to live in the same area as these kulaks) in a region where they were most active, Ukraine, or to quash Ukrainian independence movements (show them who they had to bow to to be able to eat). If the Holodomor was like the Great Leap Forward, where it appears the deaths were mostly unintentional (and due to the cult-of-personality around Mao, where people didn't want to report low grain production numbers lest they disappoint their Great Leader, so handed over way too much grain), then I would agree that the Holodomor was blown out of proportion. Then there is the fact that the death toll appears to include births that didn't take place rather than just deaths, so rather than ~12 mill it might be ~2 mill dead…y'know, I think I've kinda convinced myself that this whole Holodomor thing is mostly overblown. Still, the man was an authoritarian, and I can't abide that. If he was able to achieve true communism by his actions, that would be one thing; I wouldn't mind sacrificing a few decades to political repression if it meant that in the end anarchy/communism could be achieved. Still, he tried to collectivize the people as well as he could, and he had a little thing like total destruction from the west to contend with. He certainly didn't help things out by killing everyone around him who might have been a capable heir, so we were left with shtty leaders like Brezhnev. That is understandable though, considering that one of the worst dangers of the move toward communism is that of counter-revs co-opting the state from within (look at Mao's nightmare realized, i.e. "socialist-market-economy" China)…Jesus, I can't believe it, but while writing this I think I understand the respect peeps show to Stalin now. I can't even say that he should've just skipped the repression and gone straight to anarchy because it's obvious that counter-revs would have destroyed it were that the case. Y'know, while I think that in our (relatively) peaceful world today it is possible to skip socialist/communist stratePost too long. Click here to view the full text.
